Avatar vs. Ferngully

So Mike and I watched the new movie Avatar the other day and while it was a really cool movie, when it was over I couldn't help but feel that I had seen it before - and then it hit me! The new Avatar is the exact same story from the much-loved childhood cartoon movie Ferngully! Don't believe me? Well lets break it down... Avatar is about a human man who is part of a group trying to destroy a forest, which is inhabited by the native people who live in a giant tree. The human man is turned into one of the natives in order to learn their ways. Meanwhile he falls in love with the girl who is teaching him, so he switches sides and helps the natives overtake the humans and save their forest. Now, what is Ferngully about? Well, its about a human man who is part of a group trying to destroy the forest which is inhabited by the native people (fairies) who live in a giant tree. The human man is turned into one of the natives and begins learning their ways, meanwhile falling in love with the girl who is teaching him. He then switches sides and helps the natives overtake the humans and save their forest. I don't know about you, but that sure sounds like the same story to me! :) Don't get me wrong, Avatar was a great movie, but then again, so was Ferngully back in the day :). I'm just not sure how Avatar can be rated as the best movie of all time if it's a remake! Check it out on Youtube if you want. I'm not the only crazy person who finds this resemblance uncanny. James Cameron - you can change the setting and the characters as much as you want, but in the end, Avatar = Ferngully. Its the exact same story.
